HEArt at Starr King – Learning from the news

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

On Friday, Starr King students discussed dating violence by revisiting the top headline story last year involving singer Chris Brown’s violent behavior towards his girlfriend of the time, Rihanna.  The class all voiced their opinions about who was right and wrong, and we debated ways the situation could have been handled nonviolently. Students then made small cloth pouch amulets (from Latin amuletum; earliest extant use in Natural History [Pliny], meaning “an object that protects a person from trouble”) that can be worn around the neck.  The students also used clay to make objects that they could keep in their amulets.

HEArt at ISA – It's all in the details

Last class, all the students were working on final details to straighten and fill in the maze and to make the hill pop forward.  Making all the elements come together is the hardest part, and the students are doing an amazing job.

HHH @ MMAP – Let's make history, through hip-hop!

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

This week, producers and teen lyricist have been hard at work laying down tracks in the MMAP studio.  Teens spend an hour with our producers in the studio; and then another hour as a group learning vocabulary and figures of peace.

Carla and Nick really enjoy learning new words to increase their lyrical vocabulary.  Teen coordinator Remi Sobomehin provides SAT vocab words for teens to use in their rhymes every session!

HHH Alumni and current intern CB, takes advantage of one-on-one time with the mic.  CB and his fellow teen lyricist kept the studio open late while laying down the first of many tracks with the help of Raspire.

Costano students finished up their canvas boards in preparation for their leap into the world of spray paint.  Coming up, students will be studying murals in depth and discussing ways to make an impact on their school community through the arts.  The students will be painting a mural on the music room wall.  Melody and music = HEArt!
