We HEArt graffiti!

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

HEArt students at ISA and Chavez send powerful messages through their graffiti art.  Students were asked to think about an issue or conflict they saw at their school and to choose a word that advocates for change.  See their beautiful work below and feel the love!

Guest Artists Fear & Fancy at ISA

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Acclaimed musicians Jidenna “Chief” Mobisson and Daniel “Legion” Callahan came to ISA for two weeks to lead a guest artist workshop.  They dedicated the first day to hip-hop and after that encouraged each student to choose their own media to express themselves artistically.  The talented ISA students chose poetry, rap, dance, and graffiti for their final projects.  In the videos below, you will see incredible talent and insightful remarks from the students about the importance of creative expression.

DAVID  (11th grade) raps his latest and greatest verse, then explains how he uses poetry to express himself.

KI’MANI (7th grade) does a beautiful dance with DANICA (6th) and REGAN (6th) then explains the importance of artistic expression in society.

REGAN (6th) shows her graffiti piece “Rispetto” and explains her artistic process.

DANICA (6th) shows her graffiti piece “Maganda,” a work in progress that advocates for peace.

BYRON (7th) explains the process he uses to write raps.

The 5th graders put their finishing touches on their maracas and rainsticks last Friday.  Students were excited to take their new instruments home, where they will now be able to make beautiful music!  Transitioning from sculpture to performing arts, the next few weeks the students will be trying their hands at ACTING.  Stay tuned.
