Poetrypoetry magnetic pieces

Poetry, to me, is a way of expression. Anything can be said in a poem because it is your creation. Whatever you feel at a certain time may make you want to write it down because it is the only way to let it out. There are so many ways to write a poem and so many creative ways to express yourself. Just let your imagination flow!

P.S It’s Hard Getting Over This

Dear you,

I tried and tried

And I Cried and Cried

Tryna figure out why I can’t get over this

I sit and contemplate the decisions I made, the decisions we made

And it makes no sense

It ended at such a great expense

I wanted you and you wanted me

Is nothing all that we can ever be?

As time slowly creeps by

And my mind and feelings begin to dry

I continue to ask this trivial question

Why?
Why did it not work?

Was it my fault?

Was it your fault that your once strong feelings came to a halt?

I think not

But my heart doesn’t speak or think,

It just feels

It feels these strong emotions that no one gets

It doesn’t want to forget

I CAN’T forget

But one thing I do know is I can’t let you get to me anymore

Every time I think of you

My once strong heart feels like a tender sore

And as you poke at it

I laugh and sigh

But I really feel I’ll die inside

I cried too much outside

Sick of feeling weak

But bottling up these feelings isn’t healthy

They will eventually seep from a cracked and confused mind

Done with useless feels that are confined

My name is Porshay Hart and I am 17 years old. I go to Eastside College Prep. and am currently a junior. I love to write poetry because it helps to express what I feel. I write when I feel a certain emotion and I let my emotions flow when I start to write my poems.

Photography By: Deshawn Watson

Defined by Webster’s Dictionary, Photography is the process or art of producing images of objects on sensitized surfaces by the chemical action of light or of other forms of radiant energy.  Photographer’s take portraits of many images such as wedding portraits, school portraits, family portraits and action shots. Action shots could be anything from surfing, football, basketball,or many other physical activities. I found interest in taking portraits of  Skateboarding. On April, 23 I had a chance to interview a photographer by the name of Brother Jay , he is a photographer with his own studio here in Redwood City, California. He’s been a photographer for 50 years and has found his niche in taking school portraits. Brother Jay specializes in all grades but prefers shooting 5th grade and below. When asked why he prefers 5th grade and below Brother Jay stated that the joy and smiles on the young peoples faces light up his soul. As Brother Jay and I continued conversing, he informed me that photography is not an easy task. He also said that it took him a long time to find out what he was good at before he started off taking portraits of weddings, family portraits and much more. Brother Jay used these struggles as a opportunity to find out which portraits impressed him the most. Once finding his interest many more opportunities opened up for Brother Jay such as opening his own shop and signing a contract with many schools.

I started taking pictures of me an my friends skating and playing around. I’ve gotten pretty good at it so I will keep taking pictures. Brother jay also said that if you are a beginner you should start off with a low priced camera, because you might mess up a high priced camera. I agree with him because when I got my first camera I had a low price camera and I ended up losing it.  But, now I use a Fujifilm S700 and its digital so if I mess up I can just press delete and move on.

The pictures below were taken by me on May 31, 2009. I think these pictures are the best I have taken, because I caught my friend right in the middle of the trick so it looks better and it was perfect timing. Over the years I grew to like taking pictures.  When I got to high school I took photography class but it I really didn’t like it because it took too many steps, so I dropped the class. But, now I regret it because I havedeveloped an interest in things like how the black room works and how the picture forms when you take it.  Im thinking about taking the class again next year.

BUILD

BUILD

Mission Statement and Backgound

“Breaking the Cycle of Poverty

Young people can overcome poverty when they gain an education, financial responsibility, and self-confidence. Yet when they don’t achieve those goals, the vicious cycle of high-school dropouts, socio-economic disadvantage, and poverty continues. This is the premise that drives our mission: to provide undeserved students with educational and entrepreneurial opportunities that would otherwise not be available to them.

my words…
Build is a program where the youth can learn how to create a business and compete with other businesses within the program. As a freshman you take BUILD in school as an elective. You create a product and start competing with the other teams in your class. You will compete three times before the BPC which is the final competition. Toward the end of the year you will write a 30 page essay on your product or service offering with your group (it is really easy!). The BPC is based on three main things; how you are in class, the 30 page essay and the performance. If you win the BPC you get a free entrance to the incubator and each group member gets $100. It is a really competitive program. You should join if you are interested in business. In the second year of BUILD you can apply to the actual office where you can go into the incubator and start your business all over or keep going with your product or service. If you stay in BUILD they will also help you to go to college!

We meet one day a week from 5:15-7:00 with mentors who helps us with our business plan.

If you join the second year you decide with your team what day or days you will meet at the BUILD office.
My experience…
In BUILD I became fascinated with the leadership opportunities that are available in the business world. I have realized that whereas leading a business is not easy, if done right one can gain more than just monetary profits as it can also lead to building lifelong networks that can benefit one’s community. At first BUILD was nothing but an easy A. I really looked forward to it during the beginning but i saw that everyone was rude and disrespectful to the teacher. The teacher could never get attention from the students. He talked about CEO and COGS and nobody knew where or what those words were or what they meant. He told us we would have to write a 30 page essay. I thought the teacher was insane! He also told us we would be competing against each other and with other schools. I thought I was not going to be able to write that 30 page essay but that i could go out there and nail the competitions. But boy I was wrong, I was able to do the 30 page essay but i did not do so well in the presentations. Then I learned that I was a very nervous person. Eventually we stopped playing around and started paying attention and now thanks to our great teacher we learned all there is to know about business. We all went through the competitions. Apparently, we did not win but we all learned what it takes to live in the world of business.

College Track

collegetrack

Mission Statement

“College Track is the catalyst for change for under-resourced high school students who are motivated to earn a college degree. Since its inception, College Track has grown each year, strengthening its services and expanding its program to support more students.

College Track is an after-school, college preparatory program. Through our center-based approach and core service areas, College Track has created a culture of high expectations. We ensure that each student is college ready and provide support that many students do not have at home or school. Together, these components make a powerful, comprehensive program that empowers students to achieve their dream of a college education.”

my words…
College Track is a four year program for high school students. You apply when you are an eight grader and if you get accepted you go to ASAP, which is a summer program for College Track. There you can have fun while doing homework. Everyone is very social. When I step into College Track I always get into a good mood even though I had a rough day. I get help on my homework in tutoring, learn about scholarships in advisory and have fun in student life. I can always find something to do.
my experience…

College Track’s summer program was very fun. I got to meet new freshman from different high schools around my area. Some people are like me and some people are totally different. When the fall came around I was worried because I didn’t know if people were going to like me. But the fall came and school started and i met even more high school students. Eventually I got along with many people and to this day I still know them. College Track to me is the most important program I go to. It not only helps me with school things but I can also talk to a staff about my personal problems. I like going to college because I also see it as a way of paying back to all those people who were there to inspire and encourage me to always do my best. I see college as a way for me to repay my parents for all their hard work and being persistent in taking upon everything else. And thanks to everyone around me I am focused in school and not a kid in the streets known with a bad reputation.

HHH

the_chief

Mission Statement

“HHH educates, inspires, and empowers youth by teaching history through the genre of Hip Hop. Youth explore Hip Hop’s academic side through writing and literary workshops. In turn, participants tap into their own creative expression and gain an appreciation for Hip Hop music production.”

my words…

HHH stands for History Through Hip Hop. This is the program where you would go if you love music. In this program you learn how to make beats and how to write music. There is a great staff that can help you with anything.

my experience..

HHH is a fun program to go and just have fun. Although sometimes you have to work hard at the end you always enjoy being with the staff. We had a performance at Stanford University where we performed in a benefit concert on how hip hop started. We performed the 80s, 90s and Now (2000 and beyond). We danced and sang many songs. I sang Waterfalls by TLC with Ayela James and Epiffani who are two students in HHH. I enjoy being around both staff and students. We are currently creating an online magazine. This gives us the opportunity to make our own press where we can express our interests. The music business today is as much about art as it is marketing. This online magazine is our taste of being in music business. I must admit I was not initially excited to write for the magazine. I just wanted to produce music. Now I have learned that in the music business, sometimes you have to do things you don’t like to do in order to market yourself. I think this is what the online magazine taught us. HHH prepares us for real life situations.
